Can Orbital Data Centres Justify SpaceX’s Valuation?
Using Orbital Data Centres (server farms located in outer space) is a radical innovation. They can be powered by sunlight and cooled naturally in space. These SpaceX servers could reduce the overall cost and environmental impact of running large amounts of data storage on Earth.
SpaceX has significant advantages over other companies that may attempt orbital data centre development. It has developed reusable rocket technology and the Starship programme. Both will lower the cost of launching payloads into space. This will help build physical infrastructure for data storage in orbit around Earth.
The need for data is exploding, fuelled by AI, cloud computing and other technologies. Orbital data centres also promise scalability and efficiency. Put together, these factors mean the potential market for this type of facility is huge.
However, considerable barriers still exist for orbital data centres. These include high capital expenditure, high ongoing maintenance costs in space, and uncertain safety returns on investment. These challenges remain major obstacles.
Although it is uncertain whether orbital data centres will become a viable market, success would make SpaceX’s current valuation seem justifiable.
